I. Read the article
Suggestopedia is the name for a language
teaching methodology developed in the 1970s by the Bulgarian psychologist
Georgi Lozanov. The term comes from the words suggest and pedagogy
or teaching.
The methodology rests on
the belief that people have great mental abilities that they don't ordinarily
use. However, under the right conditions these abilities can be opened up and
people can learn great amounts of new material. The key to opening up people's mental
power lies in achieving the right mental state- that is, they need to feel happy, relaxed, and open to new
experiences.
In 1964, Lozanov realized
a famous experiment with 14 language students at the University of Sofia to
prove this point. . According to the published results, the students were able
to memorize 1,000 new French words at 90 to 100 percent accuracy in a single
session.
For students to achieve
the ideal mental state for learning, they must be both physically and
emotionally relaxed. Physical relaxation is provided by comfortable seating and
attractive environment. The teacher has an important function in helping
students to relax emotionally. The teacher's positive attitude make students
feel that they are bounded to succeed.
Since the
suggestopedia-trained teacher joins playfully in many activities and never
criticizes a student, he or she is seen more as a friend. But, the teacher's role
as an authority is also important to learning. Why? Because students are more
likely to remember information that comes from someone they consider an expert.
In a sense, for students to become suggestible it helps if they look upon the
teacher as a parent and themselves as a child.
Because it affects
people's moods so strongly, music plays an important role in suggestopedia.
Lozanov says that Baroque music by composers such as Mozart, Vivaldi, and
Handel is ideal for achieving the right mood for learning. He points to
research which shows that Baroque music both relaxes the body and activates the
brain, and recommends that students listen to Baroque music at various points
in the lesson.
